Pharmacy Residency Program

Our post-graduate year one (PYG1) managed care pharmacy residency program develops managed care pharmacist clinicians with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

You'll achieve professional excellence while gaining knowledge in many of the areas where today's managed care pharmacists practice. And you'll work as a licensed practitioner under the supervision of experienced preceptors who will help you identify your learning needs and connect you with the right opportunities to meet them.

A residency at Blue Cross NC provides systematic training to help residents achieve the highest professional competence in patient care delivery and managed care pharmacy practice.

Core learning experiences

Commercial clinical review

6-week rotation that provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical review process for the commercial market, with exposure to both pharmacy and medical prior authorization reviews.

Commercial utilization and formulary management

10-week rotation that exposes you to the clinical pharmacy services and programs supporting the commercial market.

Medicare clinical review

6-week rotation that provides a deep dive into all aspects of coverage and organization determination reviews for Medicare.

Medicare utilization and formulary management

6-week rotation designed to expose you to the development and maintenance of Medicare Part D formularies and utilization management programs.

Pharmacy quality programs

6-week rotation that focuses on the clinical and operational aspects of pharmacy quality programs, with particular focus on Star Ratings and medication therapy management services.

Provider engagement

5-week rotation centered around Blue Cross NC’s industry-leading Blue Premier℠ program, focusing on value-based contracting with major North Carolina-based health systems.

Research project

Longitudinal rotation that allows you to conduct an original research project, producing a publication-ready manuscript by the end of the residency year.

Specialty pharmacy

6-week rotation that gives you a front row seat to all of the relevant topics and issues managed by the Blue Cross NC specialty pharmacy team.

How to apply

Applicants must have graduated from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education-accredited college of pharmacy and be eligible for pharmacy licensure in North Carolina by the start of the residency program (around July 1). 

Applications must include the following:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of intent
  • Official college transcript from your college of pharmacy (undergraduate transcripts are not required)
  • 3 letters of recommendation

Volunteering outside the classroom, managed care experiences, insightful presentations, and interesting projects may help you stand out from other applicants.
